Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is a first-person shooter campaign in which Task Force 141 hunts a Quds Force officer smuggling American missiles across the globe. The mission design moves from the Al Mazrah recon opening through Amsterdam undercover work, a ghillie-suit coastal recon, a highway chase and a Chicago skyscraper assault.
The long-range scout sniper sections are the campaign’s standout, built on bullet-drop notches, repositioning and the satisfaction of taking out two targets with one shot. The ghillie-suit recon mission stands out for its slow, tense approach with patrol crawling, the heartbeat sensor and thermal spotting.
The visuals are striking once the default render resolution is corrected, and the squad banter between Ghost, Soap and Price lands well throughout. The shotgun proves excellent in the close-quarters church fight, and the set-pieces deliver the expected spectacle.
Combat is classic Call of Duty gunplay built on checkpoints, hitscan shooting and heavily scripted sequences, with deaths frequent on the pressure fights. Enemies are relentlessly grenade-heavy, and shield-carrying foes are a persistent annoyance in the later acts.
The improvised-weapon sections require scavenging glass, tape, chemicals and wax to craft shivs, smoke bombs and gas traps, and these sequences are the campaign’s weakest stretch. The highway chase piles on mines and missiles, while the story’s continuity with the earlier Modern Warfare games is never clear.
The narrative’s relationship to the original trilogy confuses rather than deepens the experience, with reused characters feeling messy. Textures also fall apart during a late tank fight, and the game forced a restart after a crash at the Shadow Company base.
Overall, mission variety, the sniper sequences and the squad banter carry this fun campaign with some pretty cool moments. Call of Duty fans after a bombastic, globe-trotting shooter will find plenty to enjoy here.
