Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War sends a customisable silent protagonist across 1981 West Berlin, 1968 Vietnam, Moscow and the Solovetsky Islands in pursuit of the Soviet operative Perseus. The campaign’s memory-focused twist reframes everything that came before it, and the five-hour runtime keeps the pace tight.
The optional evidence-board side missions are the highlight, pairing floppy-disc decryption with deducing three sleeper-agent suspects from travel records, payments and activity reports. They are brief, but the active deduction is far more engaging than the shooting galleries of the main path.
The KGB infiltration mission stands out for offering multiple routes to a single objective, from framing a target to persuading a prisoner or poisoning him. Sneaking through the Berlin tunnels with so many options available makes it the campaign’s most memorable stretch.
Gunplay feels satisfying thanks to hit markers, white-to-colour kill confirmation and reloading while aiming down sight. The damage model is more forgiving than Modern Warfare 2019’s, allowing more punishment before falling.
The main menu is the campaign’s weakest element, an advertisement wall pushing Warzone, Vanguard and Modern Warfare that is worse than anything Battlefield attempted. Side missions end before they build momentum, and early main missions feel very short.
The narrative jumps across the Black Ops timeline in ways that make the wider series context easy to lose, and the post-credits recap does little to settle which entry is which. Occasional cutscene stutter and a couple of lock-ups interrupt the flow without derailing it.
Overall, side-mission deduction, the multi-option infiltration and the satisfying gunplay make Black Ops Cold War a strong campaign. The ad-riddled UI and brief optional content are the main knocks on an otherwise tight five-hour run.
