Unravel Two continues the tradition of delivering a deeply heartfelt story without uttering a single word. The visuals remain absolutely stunning and provide a beautiful backdrop for the journey. While the game is clearly intended for co-op play, it plays surprisingly well solo as you switch between the two characters. You also have the ability to customize each Yarny, which is a nice touch even if the options are somewhat limited. Having two characters on screen allows for some very creative puzzles that require each one to perform their own specific tasks to progress. The movement mechanics feel excellent because the momentum from swinging is smooth, and Yarny performing a backflip each time makes every leap feel incredibly satisfying. It is also a relief that water and falling great distances are no longer deadly, which removes some of the frustration from the first game.
There are still a few areas where the experience could be improved. A couple of the collectibles in the final level were not very clear regarding how to actually attain them. The gameplay also feels like it plays more like a standard platformer than a true puzzle platformer this time around. From a technical standpoint, it is a bit annoying that you have to actually be in the middle of a game session just to change your graphical options. Additionally, the level structure feels a little disjointed because each stage is accessed through a portal, which lacks the sense of a grand, continuous journey that the first game captured so well.
Overall Unravel Two is a gorgeous and mechanically polished sequel that excels as a cooperative experience while maintaining the emotional core of the series. Although the shift in level design and the focus on platforming over complex puzzles might feel different for returning players, the satisfying movement and creative character interactions make it a joy to play through.
