Crysis 3 Remastered wraps up the trilogy with spectacular visual flair. Even with the knowledge that textures and environmental details have been touched up for this modern release, the game still looks incredibly impressive. The gameplay receives a massive boost through the inclusion of the tactical bow, which heavily enhances the stealth experience by allowing you to pick off enemies while remaining completely cloaked without draining your entire energy bar. Combat options are further elevated by finally allowing players to wield devastating Ceph weaponry, with your first opportunity brilliantly demonstrating the sheer destructive power of these alien tools. Exploring the levels is also highly rewarding thanks to vault-like caches scattered throughout the environments, which contain either crucial suit upgrade kits or heavy weapons like the M.I.K.E.
From a story perspective, it is wonderful to see Psycho make a return to the forefront of the action, even if the script leaves the fate of Nomad oddly unmentioned, making it difficult to know whether he is alive or dead. The narrative wraps up in a highly satisfying way, delivering an excellent final boss battle where you can strategically choose exactly when to supercharge your nanosuit to obliterate waves of enemy spawns. This climax leads into a poignant ending that gives genuine closure to the entire series, finally allowing Laurence Barnes a well-deserved rest.
However, the experience is held back by a few notable technical and design drawbacks. Much like the previous remaster, the game suffers from unexpected performance issues that simply should not be occurring on capable modern hardware like a 7800XT. On the narrative side, the opening sequence is a little confusing, as it fails to explain the jarring transition of how Alcatraz/Prophet managed to go from Central Park to being trapped in a cold sleep machine on a remote refinery. Additionally, the progression mechanics feel like a step backward, as the upgrade system from the second game was preferable for how it actively incentivized engaging in combat against the Ceph.
Overall Crysis 3 Remastered is a visually stunning and action-packed conclusion to the franchise that hits its highest notes through empowering stealth mechanics and a deeply satisfying narrative resolution. While the technical optimization hurdles on modern hardware, a jarring opening time-skip, and a less engaging upgrade path can detract from the experience, the sheer joy of the tactical bow and the explosive alien weaponry make it a fitting send-off for the nanosuit legend.
