Costume Quest

“Costume Quest is a charming, nostalgic Halloween RPG featuring creative costume mechanics and engaging combat, though repetitive side quests and restrictive sprinting slightly hold it back.”

Costume Quest captures the essence of childhood imagination perfectly because every character transforms into a heroic version of what they likely think they look like. The battle system remains engaging throughout the adventure as each costume features one of three distinct attack patterns. I really liked the variety of costumes available because they all come with their own unique strengths and weaknesses to consider. The Grubbins on Ice expansion is a nice addition that is structured similarly to the main game with three distinct areas to explore. Additionally, the battle stamp system provides a great way to add passive buffs and special effects to your character attacks which gives the combat some extra depth.

There are a few frustrations that hold the experience back slightly. The final boss of the Grubbins on Ice expansion can be a real headache because it is not immediately obvious that a certain costume is basically required to negate an attack that damages the whole party. The side quests also get a bit repetitive since every single area asks you to do the exact same things like hide and seek or bobbing for apples. I found it quite frustrating that sprinting is tied to a specific costume especially in the later stages of the game when I wanted to use a different outfit instead. The enemy variety is also fairly limited because there are only three basic enemy types that each come in four separate variations like melee, ranged, mage, and healer.

Overall Costume Quest is a charming and nostalgic journey that succeeds thanks to its creative concept and fun turn based combat. While the repetitive side quests and limited enemy types can feel a bit thin over time, the wonderful atmosphere and clever costume mechanics make it a treat for anyone who loves the spirit of Halloween.
