Assassin’s Creed remains a compelling experience as the story of Altair and the mystery surrounding his nine targets is just as interesting today as it was when the game first released. For a title that launched in 2007 it still holds up surprisingly well graphically and the various cities maintain a strong sense of atmosphere. One of the highlights is the genuine character development for Altair who transitions from an arrogant know-it-all into a much more grounded and thoughtful protagonist. The investigations provide a good amount of variety as you prepare for your main objectives and the voice acting for all the major characters is top-notch. While the dialogue is generally excellent I did hear the specific phrase about stealing in someone’s presence a few too many times while exploring the crowded streets.
However the game does show its age through several technical and design frustrations. The audio for non-important NPCs is heavily compressed and sounds muffled which can be jarring compared to the clear story dialogue. Traversal and free-running can feel a little janky at times leading to moments where Altair inexplicably struggles to climb a simple knee-high wall. Guard aggression also becomes a bit excessive in the later stages of the game making it difficult to move around freely. I found it far too easy to trigger a failure during the stealth archer investigations because their movement patterns are quite erratic. Additionally the air assassinations require you to be a little too close to your targets which prevented me from pulling off certain kills the way I had planned. The side activities are also very limited because the only real task is saving civilians and doing this eighty times across the maps becomes quite stale.
Overall Assassin’s Creed is a landmark title that successfully established a legendary franchise through its intriguing historical narrative and strong lead character. While the repetitive side content and some clunky parkour mechanics can be a test of patience the core mystery and impressive world design still make it a journey worth taking for fans of the series.
